Our History
Knights the Jewellers is the oldest established retail store in Northland still owned and operated by the same family. Knights was established in 1931 by Keith Knight and his wife Alice. Following Keith’s death in 1952, his eldest son John returned home to manage the business and eventually purchased it, continuing the strong family tradition.
In 1986, the youngest son, Monty Knight, purchased the business. Monty had previously owned a successful music and home appliance store before returning to the family jewellery trade. Under his leadership, the business continued to grow and strengthen its reputation for trust, quality craftsmanship, and genuine customer care. Monty was later inducted into The Northern Advocate Business Hall of Fame in recognition of his contribution to the Northland business community.
In recent years, Monty worked alongside his youngest daughter, Adeline Knight, sharing not only his knowledge of the trade but also his deep commitment to community and service. Following his passing, Adeline continues to proudly own and manage both the Kaitaia store and its Kerikeri sister store, Knights the Jewellers, carrying forward a legacy that began more than 90 years ago.
After serving the community for over nine decades, the Knights family remains dedicated to the values the business was built on — integrity, craftsmanship, and personal service. As licensed second-hand jewellery dealers, we advise on estate jewellery sales and purchases and, through our long-standing industry relationships, assist with unique designs, repairs, remakes, and redesign.
We are proud of our history, grateful for the generations of loyal customers who have supported us, and committed to continuing this family legacy for years to come.
